sheldon: i don’t know what color lonely is. red is angry. yellow is frightened. green is jealous. and blue is depressed. perhaps we can assign a color to lonely.
raj: nothing rhymes with orange, it’s probably lonely.
sheldon: alright, come in. you look positively orange with loneliness.
- big bang theory, the wildebeest implementation

perhaps loneliness is the color white, light of every color huddled together, additive in nature, the collection of every shade of emotion. after all, emotions are more like light than they are like paints, formless yet distinct and above all, amazing in its ability to entirely fill a space, burrowing, alighting, bathing every surface in its hue.

it is angry like red and sad like blue. it is jealous like green and it is frightened, though i do not agree that yellow is frightened. it is filled with yearning. it remembers being a different color and it clings to the absence. it is small and scared and at the same time terrifying in its largeness. no, it is large and you are the one that is small and scared.

it is white, a spilling emptiness without the knowing boundaries to instruct it, “that’s enough,” to let it know where to stop. and you are lost in it, wandering its depth in search of the elusive polar bear blinking in a snowstorm.
